 REDDISH TAUGHT GOAL SCORING LESSON

DATE FIXTURE RESULT
11/12/05 Reddish v Bury and Elton 2 7 - 1

The Reddish team which was to face Bury and Elton was a much changed side from the previous GM League game. With four new players in the Reddish team, the attacks and smooth style of play seemed to elude the players. The game started with Reddish on the back foot and immediately under pressure from an attacking Bury and Elton side. Their crisp passing through the midfield broke down the reddish defence and it was quickly one-nil Bury.

In spite of the flowing Bury play, Reddish broke down their attacks and passed the ball out to the wings. Once again with Jenny Plant running down the flanks and causing havoc in the Bury circle. Reddish won a number of penalty corners but were unable to convert despite causing a few screams in the Bury defence. However it was the reddish attacks which left them vulnerable at the back. With a lack of communication between the defenders and quick accurate passing from Bury, they increased their lead with two goals in quick succession. Reddish did not let the goals against them stop them attacking and they got one back before half time thanks the Lucy Cook, who converted a penalty corner and make Bury think this was not going to be an easy game. Reddish stopped the flow in goals with some neat attacks down the right hand side of the pitch but a sneaky goal before half-time, which beat the new keeper Duggie at the near post, increased the gap back to three.

Half time was a welcome break for the Reddish players (some who were feeling the effects on the night before). After a motivating team talk from Captain Helen, reminding the team of the previous games play, both teams started the second half looking for goals. It was Bury who took advantage first and further increased their lead to five. With the Reddish heads seeming to drop, Bury exploited the new look Reddish defence and despite a few key interceptions from Michelle Collier, Bury quickly increased their lead, making it impossible for Reddish to come back. The score was quickly at six –one but despite the ever increasing task of scoring to at least draw level, the midfield and forwards continued to look to go forward and did earn a number of long corners. Drove into the ‘D’, it was unfortunate on a number of occasions for Reddish not to at least add to their tally of one goal.

One goal was all reddish managed to score, yet Bury added to their score to take their total to seven. Reddish were handed a lesson in goal scoring by Bury but they can take positives from the game in that the new players fitted in well together with the rest of the girls. Training together will help them become stronger and combined with the talent in the rest of the squad, Reddish should look to keep playing their attacking style and end up scoring as many goals as Bury.
